Overview
The government of the republic of Zambia recognizes the high economic, socio-cultural and biological value of National Parks and Wildlife resources. The way Zambia manages and sustainably conserves this important resource will determine how Zambia realizes its full potential as an attractive tourist
Destination for both consumptive and non-consumptive tourists.
In January 2016 the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) was established through an Act of parliament following policy and legislative reforms to facilitate the re-organization of an autonomous Authority (ZAWA) into a government Department (DNPW).
The purpose of DNPW is to promote the appreciation and sustainable use of
Wildlife resources by:
• Facilitating the active participation of local communities in the management of wildlife estates;
• Promotion and development of
• tourism
• Enhancing the recognition of economic value of wildlife resources among the public and private stakeholders;
• Education of the general public
Department of National Parks and Wildlife is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Tourism and Arts. The corporate governance of the authority is based on the provisions of the Zambia Wildlife Act No. 12 of 1998.
Vision Statement for Ministry of Tourism:
“To facilitate, develop, manage and promote sustainable tourism, arts, culture and wildlife.”
Vision Statement for Department of National Parks and Wildlife:
“An exceptional Protected Area system conserving Zambia’s biodiversity and natural heritage for the benefit of the nation, whilst reconnecting and inspiring society.”
Mission Statement Department of National Parks and Wildlife:
“To conserve Zambia’s wildlife resources for the socio-economic benefit of current and future generations and the sustainable development of the nation, through leadership excellence, adhering to organisational values, responsible tourism, and well-managed partnerships.”
Objectives
• To maintain the highest levels of biodiversity that ensure conservation of ecosystems;
• To manage national parks in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner;
• To develop the management of wildlife resources jointly in Game Management Areas in partnership with local communities;
• To provide a reliable and sound business environment for development of a strong wildlife-based tourism industry.

Strategic Plan
Management of DNPW is guided by a strategic plan covering a period of four years. The plan outlines the key objectives and assumptions aimed at setting the organization on a path to effective management of the wildlife estate based on a coherent biological planning framework with a cost effective management structure supported by effective modern systems.
