About the department of tourism

The Department is responsible for tourism research and development; management of Tourism Development Fund; and regulating and licensing of casinos. It shall also be responsible for the registration of hotel managers in order to contribute to sustainable development of the country.

The Department performs the following specific functions:

  • Formulate, review and implement tourism policies and legislation in order to guide the sector;
  • Formulate tourism sector development plans and establishment of tourism development corridors, priority areas and protected areas in order to attain set objectives;
  • Conduct and coordinate tourism research in order to generate information to inform decision making;
  • Facilitate development and diversification of the tourism product;
  • Promote Tourism Business Development and investment;
  • Facilitate the domestication and implementation of international and regional treaties and protocols in tourism;
  • Collaborate with local, regional and international stakeholders on tourism matters;
  • Develop, disseminate and enforce the code of ethics and regulations in tourism;
  • Monitor and evaluate compliance by enterprise operators;
  • Manage the funds for Tourism Development;
  • Regulate and license Casinos and Hotel Managers; and
  • Promote indigenous micro and small enterprises and trade in tourism. The Department shall be headed by a Director who shall be assisted by one (1) Assistant Director and six (6) Regional Coordinators
