The Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Tourism is implementing the Zambia Green, Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (GREAT-TDP) with the financing facility of USD100 Million from the World Bank. The GREAT-TDP officially became effective on January 10, 2024 following the approval by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on June 13, 2023. The Project will be implemented for Seven (7) years and is expected to Close on 31st December 2030.
The Project Development Objective (PDO) is to strengthen the enabling environment, access to resilient infrastructure and economic opportunities in emerging tourism destinations.
The Project focuses its support on three emerging nature-based Tourism Destination Areas (TDAs): (1) Nsumbu National Park and surrounding areas (Nsumbu TDA); (2) Liuwa Plains National Park and surrounding areas (part of the West Zambezi TDA); and (3) Source of the Zambezi River and surrounding areas (part of the North Zambezi TDA). Further, the Project aims to create meaningful market linkages to more developed Tourism Development Areas (TDAs) & circuits in the Northern & Southern Circuit e.g., Lower Zambezi, Mosi-O-Tunya (Livingstone), & Kafue National Parks etc as part of the growth & diversification strategy.
The Project has three (3) components as stated below:
Seeks to improve the national-level enabling environment and opportunities for tourism that supports the country’s ambition for green economy: more effective marketing and licensing regime, efficient and integrated processes for concessions and partnerships, and enhanced practice for integrated planning for nature-based economy around tourism.
seeks to develop enabling infrastructure in the three emerging destinations and to strengthen and create meaningful linkages to more developed TDAs and circuits in the Northern and Southern circuit.
seeks to finance activities related to overall project planning, financial management (FM), audits, procurement, Environmental and Social risk management, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), reporting, communications, stakeholder coordination, basic training of activity implementing teams and beneficiaries, and mobilizing of external support and technical specialists.
