Lusaka-7th February 2026
Minister of Tourism, Honourable Rodney Sikumba, has officially launched the 2026 Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony Fundraising Walk, marking the commencement of activities leading to this year’s prestigious cultural event.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Sikumba described the Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony as Zambia’s premier traditional festival and a vital pillar in the preservation and promotion of the nation’s rich cultural heritage. He emphasized that the ceremony continues to serve as a powerful symbol of identity, history, and unity for the Ngoni people and the country at large.
The Minister highlighted the historical significance of the ceremony, noting that it commemorates the Ngoni people’s remarkable journey, from the heritage burial site in Nakonde, through the heroic crossing of the Luangwa and Fiera Rivers by King Zwangendaba in 1835, to their final settlement at Emthenguleni in Chipata.
He reaffirmed Government’s unwavering commitment, under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, to supporting traditional ceremonies as key platforms for strengthening national cohesion, promoting cultural pride, and stimulating local economic growth through tourism.
Honourable Sikumba further commended the Nc’wala National Organising Committee for its dedication to enhancing the visibility and cultural impact of the ceremony, noting that their efforts have significantly contributed to attracting both domestic and international visitors.
He called upon all Zambians to actively participate in the fundraising walk and other preparatory activities, stressing that the preservation and promotion of Zambia’s cultural heritage is a shared national responsibility.
