PRESS STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lusaka 19th September,2025
The Ministry of Tourism, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), has collaborated with the Ministry of Education aimed at revitalizing Environmental Education Clubs (EECs) in schools across the country.
This joint initiative underscores Government’s commitment to promoting environmental stewardship, civic responsibility and sustainable development among learners. By strengthening the role of EECs, pupils will be equipped with essential life skills while deepening their understanding and appreciation of Zambia’s natural heritage.
In addition, the EECs will serve as vital platforms for raising awareness among learners about Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC). Through these clubs, children will be educated on the causes and effects of HWC, as well as the importance of coexistence, conservation and community-based solutions to safeguard both people and wildlife.
The partnership is being coordinated through the Directorate of Teacher Education and Specialized Services (TESS), working closely with the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education. Together with DNPW, these directorates will spearhead the development of club guidelines, teacher orientation programmes and monitoring frameworks to ensure effective implementation and measurable impact nationwide.
Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Evans Muhanga emphasised that this initiative will help inspire a generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
“By empowering our learners with knowledge and practical skills through Environmental Education Clubs, we are not only safeguarding Zambia’s biodiversity but also addressing pressing issues such as Human-Wildlife Conflict. This will help nurture responsible citizens who value both conservation and community well-being.”
The revitalization of EECs represents a significant step in aligning the education and tourism sectors towards achieving Zambia’s environmental and developmental goals.
As a ministry we see this partnership as a vehicle for instilling environmental values, strengthening conservation efforts and nurturing the next generation of leaders committed to preserving Zambia’s natural heritage.
