The Ministry of Tourism and the Czech Republic today held a successful launch of a joint exhibition between the Livingstone Museum and the Czech National Museum under the theme: “Dr. Emil Holub: Discoveries of the Legendary Czech Explorer in the 19th Century.”
The exhibition, which opened today in Livingstone, celebrates the life and work of Dr. Emil Holub, a renowned Czech explorer, ethnographer, and natural scientist who travelled extensively across Southern Africa in the 1800s.
Dr. Holub’s explorations, many of which were carried out in present-day Zambia, contributed significantly to the global understanding of African culture, geography and biodiversity during that period.
Gracing the official opening was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health of the Czech Republic, Mr. Vlastimil Válek, who commended the collaborative efforts of both countries in preserving and showcasing shared cultural heritage. Mr. Válek emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy and expressed confidence that this exhibition would further strengthen the longstanding ties between Zambia and the Czech Republic.
Also in attendance were Provincial Minister Honourable Credo Nanjuwa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Evans Muhanga and Director of the Czech National Museum, Dr. Michal Lukeš,the District Commissioner Ms. Eunice Nawa the Mayor of Livingstone Ms. Constance Muleabai and other senior government officials who all applauded the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting museum cooperation and educational exchange.
This exhibition not only highlights historical narratives but also symbolizes the power of international collaboration in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage. It offers an opportunity for Zambians and international visitors to explore a significant part of Zambia’s history through the lens of a 19th-century European explorer who deeply respected and documented the lands and people he encountered.
The Ministry of Tourism remains committed to advancing Zambia’s cultural and natural heritage through such partnerships and encourages the public to visit the Livingstone Museum to experience this important exhibition.
